HARAPAN BARU YOUTH SEEKS AGONG’S INTERVENTION IN RM2.6B FIASCO

Agong
(Malay Mail Online) – Gerakan Harapan Baru’s (HB) youth wing today requested the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah to order the formation of a Royal Commission Inquiry (RCI) to investigate the RM2.6 billion donation in the prime minister’s accounts.
After handing over a memorandum to a palace representative, the wing’s coordinator Mohd Sany Hamzan told reporters that although the authorities have confirmed that the funds were meant to be a donation, there were still many unanswered questions on what the money was used for and who it came from.
“We would like to request for RCI. There are too many questions, who are the donors? What are their purpose in donating such amount to the Malaysian prime minister? What are the importance of such donations?” Mohd Sany said.
He added that the ongoing investigations on 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) by various government agencies were insufficient as they were likely influenced by politics.
Mohd Sany cited as examples the sudden change of Attorney-General as well as the alleged harassment of Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) officials involved in the probe on 1MDB’s former subsidiary SRC International.
Former AG Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail was recently dismissed from his position due to health reasons.
The sudden crackdown on MACC over the past two weeks has also triggered claims that there may be “hidden hands” behind the order to arrest and question officers from the anti-graft agency.
Last week, MACC confirmed that RM2.6 billion had been found in Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s private accounts, but said the funds came from donors in the Middle East and not from 1MDB as previously suspected.
Najib said on the weekend that MACC’s statement effectively cleared him of corruption claims regarding the RM2.6 billion.
