Veteran Umno leader Tan Sri Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah today insisted that he still supported Datuk Seri Najib Razak, after it was revealed that an Umno leader was allegedly behind a plot to oust the prime minister.
He said the plot was news to him, but did not rule out the possibility that it existed.
On whether he still supported Najib, Tengku Razaleigh said: “Yes, I am not with the opposition.
“But I hope we all do the right thing. Speak the truth. Explain to the people properly.”
But, Tengku Razaleigh, who is also known as Ku Li, was initially reluctant to admit he supported Najib, and only did so after he was asked thrice by reporters.
He was at first coy, and only said he supported "everybody who does things right for the country".
When asked again, he said: "I'm still in the Barisan Nasional Backbenchers Club. What does that mean?"
Ku Li also told reporters that the government could only by removed by a vote of no confidence, as other methods would not be in line with the constitution.
He said overthrowing the government by force would require military might, which would be a difficult feat for anyone.
"If you want to 'topple' the government, you would need the military. MPs or ordinary citizens cannot do that if their numbers aren't enough.
"If they want to do it, it must be according to the federal constitution," he said.
Ku Li, the Gua Musang MP, did not rule out the possibility that Umno MPs may consider joining a vote of no confidence against Najib if they felt it was the right thing to do.
"Umno members are normal human beings, too. If they feel that what is going on is against what they are championing for, then they might feel it is right to do that."
Earlier today, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said he had learned that an Umno leader was behind a plot to overthrow the government using "backdoor methods".
He said the leader was in cahoots with opposition lawmakers to obtain statutory declarations (SD) from the majority of the MPs to remove the government.
