Najib, who is also Umno president, said that there are plenty of people who "consider themselves to have caliber".
"But it's rare to find someone who has loyalty. Smart people, there are plenty of them," he said.
"But by loyalty, I don't mean blind loyalty," he added in his speech today when opening the Seremban Umno AGM in Paroi, Negri Sembilan.
Muhyiddin, who is still Umno deputy president, was removed from the Cabinet after becoming critical of Najib's handling of the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) scandal.
He also said that a ship could only have "one captan".
"I am okay with criticism and disagreements, but it must be done in a closed forum. It is okay even if we argue, as long as we don't throw chairs at each other," he said.
"We can even bang the table, but just do not do it outside, it ruins the party image."
He said that the opposition knew this well, referring to the supporters of jailed opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
"They have all kind of leaders. There are even those who are caught on video, but they still defend their leader. Why? Because they know they must be united," he said.
Meanwhile, Johor Umno leader Datuk Dr Puad Zarkashi said that Umno Johor was expected to back Najib despite Muhyiddin's sacking, even though the latter is perceived as having strong support in Johor.
"I don't think this will have a big effect. Johor Umno is used to this. There was Tan Sri Shahrir Samad as well who quit due to disagreements," he said.
