Ismail: Muhyiddin played into opposition’s hands

Umno has nothing to gain but all to lose by revealing funding, says supreme council member

GEORGE TOWN: Umno supreme council member Ismail Sabri Yaakob has rebuked deputy president Muhyiddin Yassin, saying he had played into the hands of Umno’s political rivals by calling for the party’s finances and sources of funding to be made public.
Ismail Sabri said Umno had nothing to gain but all to lose if party president Najib Razak revealed details, as urged by Muhyiddin, about a US$700 million (RM2.6 billion) deposit in his private banking account in 2013, which he has said was a donation.
“Some things cannot be revealed. He (Muhyiddin) should know that his demands to reveal the whereabouts of the money will benefit the opposition, not Umno,” Ismail Sabri told reporters after chairing a meeting with grassroot members of Umno and members of village committees.
“I’m worried that if we were to reveal what should not be revealed, it will only harm us,” he said, adding that he supported Najib’s intention to establish a federal government body to regulate political funds.
Saying it was a comprehensive idea, Ismail added: “Laws must be created to avoid recurrence of the same.”
Ismail Sabri reminded Muhyiddin that Umno had never revealed its political funds under the leadership of Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.
Muhyiddin needed to think deeper, he said, noting that Parti Keadilan Rakyat had already filed a civil suit seeking to nullify the results of the 2013 general election based on allegations that the RM2.6 billion “donation” was used for election purposes.
Najib, Umno secretary-general Tengku Adnan Mansor, 1Malaysia Development Bhd and the Election Commission were named as defendants.
News reports had tied 1MDB, the government’s investment arm, to the RM2.6 billion deposit, after revelations of a trail of financial transactions through various companies linked to 1MDB.
Muhyiddin had said in Kemaman on Friday that Najib should reveal the whereabouts of the balance of the RM2.6 billion, which the anti-corruption agency MACC has said to have come from a Middle Eastern donor.
Ismail said Najib had already clarified about 1MDB’s debts and its assets, adding that investigations were still being carried out. “Let’s not jump to conclusions. Wait for the investigation to be over,” said Ismail, who is rural and regional development minister.
The minister also defended his recent proposal to build a Malay-only digital mall which he referred to as “Low Yat 2″. He said it was not a racist idea, as claimed by opposition politicians and the MCA. He pointed out he was in charge of Mara, the agency for Malay and bumiputera interests.
On Wednesday, the MCA labelled Ismail Sabri as a regressive minister for proposing Low Yat 2.
In response, Ismail said: “I am doing everything in my power to protect the best interest of everybody. All I am trying to do is to help Malay businessmen.”
