Former deputy prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin (photo) had claimed that Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor was also present when Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak explained that the RM2.6 billion in his personal account was donation from a Middle East source.
However, when quizzed on this today, Tengku Adnan declined to comment.
“I cannot comment on that,” the Umno secretary-general told reporters at a Hari Raya open house in Putrajaya today.
Muhyiddin (photo) had claimed that besides Tengku Adnan, Umno treasurer Husni Hanadzlah was also present.
“After the WSJ (The Wall Street Journal) incident, the party president called me to his office, witnessed by the Umno secretary-general and treasurer (Husni Hanadzlah)," he had said.
The former number two, who was dropped from the cabinet some 48 hours after making critical remarks about 1MDB at an Umno division meet, claimed that Najib refused to name the donor.
He also said when quizzed on why the sum, which was transferred just before the last general election, was put into Najib’s personal account, the premier said this was requested by the donor.
The issue was first exposed by The Wall Street Journal on July 3.
On another matter, Tengku Adnan said he would seek to dismiss a suit filed by PKR on the RM2.6 billion against him, Najib, 1MDB and the Election Commission.
“They cannot sue us that way, just on a whim. We will look into it, and we will try to get it struck out," he was quoted as saying.
The suit filed with the Kuala Lumpur High Court yesterday accused the defendants of alleged electoral offences.
The plaintiffs include PKR supremo Anwar Ibrahim, vice-presidents Nurul Izzah and Tian Chua, party election director Saifuddin Nasution Ismail and Harapan Baru (HB) member Dzulkefly Ahmad. - M'kini
