Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal said today leaders should not just listen to sycophants as this would be detrimental for the government.
Speaking at the Bentong Umno division delegates’ meeting, the former minister said leaders who craved praise surrounded themselves with yes-men and could not tell the difference between flattery and loyalty.
"Leaders who are crazy for praises will surround themselves with sycophants. Such a leader is confused between real loyalty and flattery. Those who resort to flattery will lie.
"Whereas those who are loyal hold on to the right principles," he said when opening the Bentong Umno division meeting today.
Shafie was dropped from the Cabinet in a reshuffle last month, losing his post as minister of rural and regional development.
Umno deputy president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin was also dropped in the reshuffle as deputy prime minister and education minister.
Both leaders had been critical of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak's brainchild, 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB), which is owned by the Finance Ministry and which has incurred debts of RM42 billion.
Since being axed, Muhyiddin and Shafie have continued criticising Najib on the issue as well as over the RM2.6 billion from an unknown Middle-Eastern donor.
Shafie said real loyalty was being loyal towards the truth, and this was different from the sycophants who are only chasing after positions.
He said leaders should accept criticism and advice as those offering did not do so out of hate but because they loved their leaders and the party.
"The price of honesty is costly. Yet it is necessary to protect the emperor from appearing before the public without clothes on.”
