Citing as example the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal, Tengku Adnan said the issue has gone viral and there were people commenting on it as if they were very well versed in financial matters.
"Malaysians today love to listen to slander, and all sorts of stories.
"We make everything a rumour. We look at what is on Twitter, Whatsapp and everything becomes rumour to be spread among ourselves.
"Like in the case of 1MDB, everyone becomes a banker or financial consultant when we actually don't know anything about what is happening," he said at a Hari Raya event at Bandar Tun Razak in Kuala Lumpur today.
Such a situation, Tengku Adnan said, worried him because it could cause mayhem.
"Please... what I fear most now is that the peace we have now will be gone," he said.
He urged Malaysians of all races and religions to live in harmony and have mutual respect.
He said there would be no racial issues or tension among the races if everyone respected one another and were humble.
The Umno secretary-general said he appointed a Chinese to the Kuala Lumpur City Council to show that there was no racism in the country.
"In DBKL, the number two man after the mayor is a Chinese. I put him there. It was never done before. We all work together. So no need to fight especially when we are all Malays... of one race and religion.
"You think it is easy to administer a country? What is important is that we should not envy and be arrogant," he said.
