Any attempt to overthrow the government through back-door methods would only succeed "over the dead bodies of Umno members", party vice-president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi warned today.
"This is a democratic country, we have general elections to choose the government, even though there are provisions that allow the Agong to dissolve Parliament on the advice of the prime minister if there is a loss of confidence.
"If there are statutory declarations from the majority of MPs and the current government falls, then a new government will be formed.
"Over the dead bodies of Umno members will the government be changed through back-door methods," said Zahid, who is also deputy prime minister and home minister.
Zahid was referring to his revelation yesterday that an Umno leader was behind a plot to change the government with the support of opposition lawmakers.
He had said that they would use a statutory declaration to remove the government, and were now trying to woo Barisan Nasional (BN) MPs to their cause.
But he said today that BN would ensure that none of their lawmakers switched parties.
"We worked so hard to hold the general election, we won the majority even though it was not two-thirds.
"When the ship tosses and the waves crash against it, there are those who want to damage the ship and let the seawater flood it.
"I am not naming anyone. Alhamdulillah, if any leaders are denying it," said Zahid.
The Bagan Datoh MP vowed that he would not allow the government to fall.
"The statutory declaration has already been prepared and it needs the signatures of not just the 87 opposition MPs, but also one from BN, and they are targeting another 37 BN MPs.
"Is that what you call a BN government, if we have 37 and they have 87?
"Before it's too late, I, as the vice-president, will ensure the conspiracy will not succeed."
