The delegates, who attended the launch of the divisional meeting of the three wings by deputy Umno president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, shouted "no" when asked if they believed Najib’s explanation on the matter.
Muhyiddin, who was axed by Najib at a Cabinet reshuffle last Tuesday, said he was told by Najib that the donor wanted the money to be banked into the prime minister's personal accounts.
"I asked him, where did the money go to, (he answered) my account. Why did it go into your account? 'The donor asked for it to be banked into my account'," Muhyiddin told delegates while recounting Najib's conversation with him on the matter.
"Do you believe it?" the former deputy prime minister asked delegates who then answered, “No!”.
Dryly, Muhyiddin then said: "Have to believe, people had already said so, just believe it... scared after this the (Umno) disciplinary board will call me.”
He said he did not know that the money was a donation, until the announcement by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) recently.
"I was not informed about the RM2.6 billion. I only knew about it after The Wall Street Journal's report. As deputy president of the party, I know nothing about it.
"I don't want to question the donation. I am not going to dispute it either. (But) It was not a small sum," he said.
Muhyiddin said Najib never disclosed the source of the money to him.
"I asked him where was it from, and he said the Middle East. I asked him who was the person, but he said he can't tell me," said Muhyiddin.
He said people he met were asking him questions about what had happened to the cash.
"The accounts were closed… is there a balance? Has it been transferred to the party's account? I can't answer all this. A lot of questions have yet to be answered.
"If it was true that the government is transparent, accountable, we have to show this to the people, not just with words. Only then will the people believe in the government," he said.
