Putrajaya on high alert for cyber-attacks

The police, acting in a pre-emptive move with Interpol and FBI, has reportedly roped in several suspects who may be linked with the threat.
Putrajaya,-cyber-attacks
KUALA LUMPUR: The government in Putrajaya is on high alert for the possibility of cyber-attacks which have been threatened by Anonymous Malaysia, an unknown group, against targets in the country, according to the UK-based SC Magazine (SCM) for IT Security Professionals.
The threatened attacks, it was said, would take place on August 29 to August 30 from 6pm to 5pm to coincide with the Bersih 4.0 Rally in Kuala Lumpur, Kota Kinabalu and Kuching to call on Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak to step down. Bersih 4.0 has since denied any knowledge of Anonymous Malaysia and condemned the group for linking its threatened attacks with its planned rally.
The Modernisation and Management Planning Unit (Mampu) has issued instructions to Ministries, government departments and agencies to strengthen their website security.
The IT departments of these entities, said SCM, are being advised to monitor activities between now and August 30 for possible attacks. “Also, several IT companies have been placed on standby to monitor websites and servers in the event of an attack.”
SCM said that the police, acting in a pre-emptive move with Interpol and FBI, has reportedly roped in several suspects who may be linked with the threat issued by Anonymous Malaysia.
SCM quoted Hamza Taib, Federal Commercial Crime Investigation Department Deputy Director, as saying: “I cannot say as it’s not the date yet. But if it happens, it means our arrests were wrong. If it does not happen, it means that our arrests were correct.”
Specific targets named by Anonymous Malaysia, under its “all-out internet warfare”, include the police, the Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission (MACC), and 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), as part of 150 websites that they have “strategically selected”.
SCM quoted Science, Technology and Innovation Minister, Wilfred Madius Tangau, as saying in the AsiaOne website that security specialists, CyberSecurity Malaysia and Mimos Bhd, have embarked on proactive measures such as seeking and fixing vulnerabilities and running remediation drills to protect the information networks of ten public sector agencies.
These cover defence and security, banking and finance, information and communications, water, transportation, health and emergency services plus food and agriculture.
Mimos was providing advanced security technologies for the operation, and the agencies have been told to upgrade and patch their software. Mimos is the national ICT research and development agency.
An eight-minute video posted by Anonymous Malaysia on August 4 on its official Facebook Page was no longer available.
Besides threatening the Malaysian Government with its “all-out internet warfare”, it warned the Prime Minister to resign.
A figure wearing a Guy Fawkes mask, and using a synthesized voice with an accent which mispronounced Malaysian names and words, declared: “Today, we are confronting you, Dato’ Seri Haji Mohammad Najib bin Tun Haji Abdul Razak, to declare a duel and challenge.”
The Bersih 4.0 Rally on August 29 would be over allegations of corruption.
The organizers want Najib to step down so that investigations can continue on various financial scandals including some over which he allegedly presided. Bersih is a NGO dedicated to free, fair and clean elections and upholding the rule of law.
