RM2.6 BILLION??? No rule against political donations, insists GERAKAN DISGRACE KENG LIANG
As netizens greet news of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's receipt of hefty donations with cynicism, Gerakan Youth chief Tan Keng Liang is on a mission to show that generous donors are not uncommon.
For a few hours today, Tan had been retweeting news items - some as far back as 2012 - on the work of numerous philanthropists.
Among others, Tan retweeted about the works of Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, media mogul Ted Turner, businessmen Warren Buffet and Abdullah Ahmad Al Ghurair.
However, of the 11 examples cited by Tan, only one involved political financing - a US$25,000 donation by Buffet to a pro-Hilary Clinton group.
After making his point about the existence of philanthropists, Tan opined that political donations should be regulated.
"Anyone can donate to any political party they wish. Any amount as they wish. And no transparency. Perhaps time to regulate. Reforms please.
"There are no laws in Malaysia which govern or prohibit political donations. Time for reforms," wrote Tan.
Yesterday, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) had declared that the RM2.6 billion deposited in Najib's private bank accounts was not from 1MDB but were "contributions from a donor".
This has sparked widespread speculation that investigations on the RM2.6 billion had been closed.
Earlier today, netizens began poking fun of Najib through a series of #DearNajib tweets. - M'kini
