ROSMAH FIGHTS TO KEEP NAJIB IN POWER: All eyes on WHEN Zahid, Khairy will jump from Rosmah's 'Titanic'

ROSMAH FIGHTS TO KEEP NAJIB IN POWER: All eyes on WHEN Zahid, Khairy will jump from Rosmah's 'Titanic'
KUALA LUMPUR - Just hours after newly appointed Deputy Prime Minister Zahid Hamidi promised no further action against MACC officers, hauled up allegedly over 'leakage' of information, a sudden strike from the very highest echelon of power stunned the nation.
Two directors from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) were transferred to the Prime Minister's Department with immediate effect on Friday night.  They were Bahri Mohd Zin, whose special operations division has been probing Prime Minister Najib Razak's role in the 1MDB-linked corruption scandal, where a staggering sum of RM42 million had been allegedly diverted via a state-owned firm, SRC International, into his personal bank accounts.
"You don't need to be a rocket scientist to conclude that the motive behind the transfer is to neutralise them and prevent them from completing their work of investigating 1MDB," former diplomat Noor Farida Ariffin of the group of prominent Malays, or G25, was reported as telling The Malaysian Insider.
"I urge the authorities to provide an immediate explanation regarding the transfer of these two MACC officers in order that there would not be any perception that there has been a political interference," Opposition chief Wan Azizah said in a statement.
Sign of insecurity, panic & desperation
Other observers were more blunt with their words, laying the blame squarely on Najib and his controversial but powerful wife Rosmah Mansor.
"Najib's days are numbered. To those in the top Umno circles, this could be the sign Rosmah's insecurity has reached the max. Both desperately want the MACC to stop the very embarrassing investigation against Najib," a political source said.
"If I were in the corridors of power, I would be very careful now and watch my back. For sure, there will be more nasty work after this. The couple is in head-on clash with everyone. Zahid is no exception and he should be careful he doesn't end up being their scapegoat."
Zahid is also Home Minister, and is in charge of the police. Both he and the Inspector General of Police Khalid Bakar have been blamed for a week-long crackdown on the MACC.
The breaking point was a raid at the MACC office on Thursday, which sparked an unprecedented public furore and forcing the police to back off.
"I guarantee that there will be no arrests of MACC officers by the police, it is only to take their statements. I guarantee that there will be no further action," Zahid had told the press on Friday morning.
Haunting of Putrajaya continues as civil servants revolt against bid to suppress & gag them
Yet hours later, the bold orders to transfer the MACC duo came without warning. Hence, the speculation that the powerful 'hidden hands' behind crackdown might be from the PM's household itself.
"The haunting of Putrajaya continues. The frightened occupants are seeing aberrations everywhere. From The Star online: "MACC directors Bahri Mohd Zin and Rohaizad Yaakob have been transferred to the Prime Minister's Department with immediate effect." They don't even trust civil servants anymore," wrote former top editor Kadir Jasin in his blog.
Mahathir, Najib
Kadir is a staunch supporter of former prime minister Mahathir Mohamad, who has demanded the corruption-tainted Najib resign from office.
But Najib, the eldest son of Malaysia's second prime minister Abdul Razak Hussein, had refused and instead vowed to fight to the bitter end.
More nasty moves to come as Najib, Rosmah fight to the end: Zahid, Khairy to withdraw support?
In his quest to cling to power, Najib had made use of the police to arrest, detain and threaten his critics - both within the government, his own Umno party as well as the Opposition.
The PM also controversially sacked Muhyiddin Yassin, his former deputy prime minister, and the Attorney General Gani Patail, who was allegedly preparing to issue an arrest warrant to charge him for corrupt activities in the 1MDB-linked SRC International.
"The transfers of the 2 MACC directors  show hysteria and a very emotional hand. People in Umno say they smell Rosmah influencing Najib. The couple are near to the end of their power and I think they know it. That's why the panic and desperation," said the source.
"I suspect it won't be long before Zahid abandons them - for his own political survival, he will have no choice," the source added.
Khairy, Zahid
Already Khairy Jamaluddin, the Umno Youth chief and a key power broker in the party, has professed shock at the transfers.
"The intimidation on MACC must be stopped. I cannot accept an attack on the institution such as this," he said.
Pointedly, the Umno Youth chief also said MACC must be allowed to perform its tasks without any hindrance.
"We have to take care of our institutions. Don't ruin all institutions in the country just because we have a specific agenda. I am not willing to allow and let such thing to happen," Khairy warned. Malaysia Chronicle
