ZAHID: SD TO OUST GOVERNMENT TECHNICALLY LEGITIMATE, BUT UMNO WILL NEVER ALLOW IT

zahid hamidi
(Malay Mail Online) – An alleged statutory declaration (SD) aimed at pushing a no-confidence vote in Parliament against the Najib administration may technically be legitimate but such a “backdoor approach” will be opposed by Umno, Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said today.
In his opening address at the Tampin Umno division meeting here, the Deputy Prime Minister insisted that the only proper avenue for a change of government was through general elections.
“Democratic or not, it is being done outside of the election process. We cannot let our leaders be toppled unless it is trough votes….What did Lim Kit Siang say yesterday? That is not wrong for a vote of no confidence (via SD) as it is part of democracy
“InsyaAllah…from Umno all over the country, we will never allow the backdoor way to happen because the government now is the choice of the people through democratic means by way of national polls,” he said.
At the Jempol Umno division meeting opening address later, Zahid however admitted that there is a clause which allows for a change in government if the said SD contains the signatures and support of majority of the MPs in the Dewan Rakyat.
“Though there is a clause that if there is a vote of no confidence, the Agong, on the advice of prime minister, can disband the government.
“There is also a clause that if the SD is obtained from the majority parliament members, the government then topples and a new government comes in,” the Umno vice president added.
In his speech to Ampang Umno delegates earlier today, Zahid claimed an Umno leader, whom he declined to name, was trying to get lawmakers from both sides of the political divide to sign an SD to show that they had the majority voice to move a no-confidence vote in the Dewan Rakyat.
Attention then shifted to ax-ed deputy prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin who is another fierce critic of prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s brainchild — 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).
However, Muhyiddin told Umno delegates in Semporna, Sabah yesterday that he would be “stupid” to want to topple the BN government he has helped to build.
