Khairun son of Aseh Che Mat is now the defacto head honcho in the Prime Minister’s Department.

He took over the position left vacant by Alies Noor and has just skyrocketed to the top of the food chain.

Somehow, Dato Seri Najib has begun to trust Khairun more and more over other advisors in the vipers pit we call Jabatan Perdana Menteri. Khairun used to be seen behind Dato Seri Najib, but now he is seen walking side by side the Prime Minister and President of UMNO. This level of physical proximity can only indicate how powerful and favoured Khairun is within the PM’s inner circle.

Now if Najib manages to survive the next 2 months, he is more or less home clear and will be impossible to dislodge.

And Khairun should take most of the credit due to his unorthodox and daring manner in tackling dissension – favouring the hard-line approach of no compromise and a show of power. This led to the ouster of Tan Sri Muhiyiddin and other key members of the Task Force as well as the decision to charge Dato Paduka Khairuddin and Matthias Chang under SOSMA.

It seems that Tun Dr Mahathir is facing yet another obstacle in Tingkat 4. Previously during Pak Lah’s time, it used to be Khairy, now it is Khairun.

In terms of personality, power and capability, Khairun currently is definitely a more dangerous foe than Khairy was during the Level Four days. Khairun has shown great killer instinct and is a natural finisher like a Suarez in a Barcelona as compared to Khairy, who was more like a Juan Mata in Pak Lah’s Man United.

The natural question is how far could Khairun go?

Khairy has managed to become a Federal Minister just shy of 40 years old. And any potential political ambitions Khairun has means going up against Khairy Jamaluddin at some later stage.

Khairun has already shown that his contempt for Pemuda, using RPK’s Malaysia Today and other bloggers to accuse Khairy of betraying Najib.

So will Khairun be able to take down Khairy?

That will not be so easy.

This is because Khairy is already an established force in UMNO and has strong grassroots support.

Khairy will be most likely going for the Vice-President’s post in the upcoming UMNO Elections whereas Khairun has yet to make a mark in National politics. His previous attempts to gain a position in politics failed when he was defeated in the Putrajaya UMNO Youth EXCO contest.

But that puts Khairun in a very precarious position.

No doubt given his young age, he will most likely outlive Dato Seri Najib’s political career. But he will only be content to play in the shadows as the puppet master extraordinaire. And puppet masters don’t last long.

Before Khairun it was Jho Low. Before Jho Low it was Omar Ong.

So the young puppet masters in the PMO have a shelf life of sorts. Today Khairun is the soup of the day, tomorrow he just maybe chap suey.

The only way forward for Khairun is to bury the memory of the painful defeat at his first try at UMNO politics and to try again. But for that, Khairun needs something which KJ had in abundance – a first rate political propaganda team!
