DR M TO BE ARRESTED ON FRIDAY? IGP SAYS EX-PM TO GIVE STATEMENT 'SUBJECT TO AVAILABILITY' OF HIS LAWYER'
The police may on Friday record Dr Mahathir Mohamad's statement in connection with reports filed accusing him of making defamatory statements against Umno leaders.
Inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar said the former prime minister had provided Nov 6 as a tentative date.
"But this is subject to the availability of his lawyer," Khalid told Malaysiakini.
Asked where the statement would be recorded, Khalid replied it would be up to Mahathir to decide.
Khalid has previously said Mahathir was being investigated under Section 500 of the Penal Code for criminal defamation.
This was in relation to his statement during Bersih 4, where Mahathir made a double appearance on Aug 29 and Aug 30, and accused Umno division leaders of taking bribes.
Following this, several division leaders filed police reports against Mahathir.
However, the IGP clarified that the former prime minister was not being investigated for his presence at the rally, which, among other things, called for Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's resignation.
Dr Mahathir
Mahathir, who was opposed to street rallies during his tenure as prime minister, defended Bersih 4 on the grounds that the people had no choice but to take to the streets to air their displeasure with the country's leadership.
The former prime minister has repeatedly called on Najib to resign, accusing him of numerous misdeeds, including theft in relation to 1MDB.
However, the prime minister has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing and accused Mahathir of being part of a plot to topple him. - M'kini
