KUALA LUMPUR - Despite holding rallies in support of party President Datuk Seri Najib Razak, Sungai Besar Umno division chief Datuk Jamal Mohd Yunus is now believed to be one of the seven Umno leaders in danger of being suspended from the party.
According to a source quoted by The Malaysian Insider in its report, the others currently watched and monitored by the party leaders include former Umno president and Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, deputy president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and vice-president Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal, former Cabinet minister Tan Sri Zainuddin Maidin, former Kedah Menteri Besar Tan Sri Sanusi Junid and Cheras Umno division chief Datuk Seri Syed Ali Alhabshee.
Rumours of who the seven may be have been circulating around since Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor announced that at the moment, seven Umno members were being investigated by a committee at the party’s headquarters.
The committee would present its findings to Najib and the disciplinary board, which would then determine the punishment to be meted out.
However, the source who spoke to the portal said that the secretary-general’s office was still scrutinising the offences allegedly committed by these members and was said to be facing difficulties in framing charges.
The source claimed that the legal adviser handling the cases involving the seven had, in the middle of investigations, opted out as he was unable to build a case against the seven.
“The secretary-general’s office is still trying to determine the offences they had committed.
“The lawyer has withdrawn from the case over not knowing what offence to charge them with,” the source was quoted as saying.
The tension between Muhyiddin and the rest of the party leaders had risen significantly especially after he was removed from his position as the deputy Prime Minister in a surprise Cabinet reshuffle on July 28.
The source said the party was now desperate to act against Muhyiddin before its general assembly in December and prevent him from officiating the Youth, Wanita and Puteri wings’ assemblies.
“If there’s a chance, maybe Muhyiddin will only deliver a winding-up speech at the end of the general assembly,” the source told the news portal.
Jamal’s place in the list was the most surprising as for the past couple of months, he has been one of the most vocal and avid supporter of Najib’s administration, declaring his loyalty through the racially biased Sept 16 red shirt rally.
He had also repeatedly called for the thorns within Umno’s flesh to be removed immediately, with his latest move being to claim the presence of a movement to oust Muhyiddin. - Therakyatpost
