YOURSAY | ‘Umno doesn't really want the bill to be debated, it was just a calculated move.’
Hang Babeuf: UKM associate professor Mohammad Agus Yusoff says that while Umno and PAS “may have difficulty in explaining matters” to the many non-Malays who “misunderstood Hadi’s bill as a hudud bill, he confidently opined that “for Malay voters, they understood clearly that this was nothing about hudud.”
Let us be clear about this. The well-known ‘overture’ to ‘The Marriage of Figaro’ is not, and is not to be confused with, the opera called ‘The Marriage of Figaro’ - but it sure is an overture and a very fine opening and introduction to all that follows it.
It’s the same with Act 355 and hudud/syariah criminal law and its dire penalties and punishments.
Kuasa Rakyat: Umno will go down to the ‘padang’ and beat their breasts on how ‘Islamic’ they are for wanting the ‘Hudud Bill’ to be debated as soon as possible.
But they knew that PAS will never want to debate the bill so early since it will surely be defeated. Umno doesn't really want the bill to be debated either, it was just a calculated move so that they can use this in the coming by-elections. Malays/Muslims should not be deceived by Umno.
On the other hand, MCA supported Umno's move as well, and the sandiwara is that MCA would object vehemently and threaten to resign, with Umno finally saying that they will further "consider the inputs of everyone in the spirit of the BN family" and so for the meantime keep the bill in abeyance.
And with this, MCA will go down to the ‘padang’ beating their breasts as well to say how they have defended the non-Muslims, in particular the Chinese, and were willing to sacrifice everything. Chinese/non-Muslims should not be deceived by MCA since it was all just play-acting.
Fair Play: If the majority community of the country thinks with their heart and fervently believe or are being led to believe that unity based on their religious affiliation and their numerical superiority will lead the nation towards economic progress and development, they will be in for a real big shock.
Starwars: PAS is no position to even talk or propose any law, be it hudud or otherwise, since PAS does not have the majority in Parliament and since PAS is not the ruling party.
After all, PAS only has one state under its belt and PAS can't even muster support and form the state government in Malay states such as Terengganu or even Kedah.
How could PAS under any circumstances claim that the Muslim majority want hudud or any law associated with it to be implemented?
Without having the numbers in Parliament reflecting Malay Muslim support, PAS clearly has no legal or moral right to talk or even propose any law, let alone debate hudud unless PAS is in cahoots with Umno, which again would mean that both Umno and PAS have betrayed the people's trust.
The people, be it the Muslims or even the non-Muslims, at least at this point in time, did not give any mandate to PAS.
The reality of the matter is that since independence, both the Malay Muslims and the non-Malays have rejected hudud law and the difference is that the majority of the Malays expressed their disapproval of the hudud law silently through the ballot box, whereas the non-Malays expressed their disapproval of the hudud law through the ballot box.
The Analyser: So, in the end it all comes down to race and religion, again. It seems that Malaysians, particularly their political leaders, have learnt nothing in the past 58 years.
Think, if one party had campaigned on the platform of complete separation of religion from state, then the hudud issue (and many others) would have been defused for all time.
But no party had any such platform at all so we are back on the tired, but proven race and religion merry-go-round.
RCZ: Since when did Umno and BN care about the country and the rakyat? And since when did the Malay Muslims get smart and see that religion should not be a part of politics?
And since when has Parti Amanah Negara or PKR realised this and started educating the people to please leave religion out of politics and good governance and not intermix the two?
Start this education now. Religion in politics regresses and not progresses.
Worldly Wise: About 300 years ago when Tsar Peter the Great wanted to introduce universal education in Russia, the bishops restrained him.
The clergy was said to want to control the masses. It would be difficult if the masses were all educated.
BN and PAS allegedly do not allow Malays to openly discuss their religion. All the imams are government employees. They preach what they are asked to preach.
Equation #9: I will submit this checklist for the people who want to implement hudud - ada buat satu daripada niat busuk terterai dibawah?
1. Steal/rob.
2. Lie.
3. Backstab.
4. Kill (in)directly.
5. Sex (unlawful).
6. False accusations.
7. Excessive greed.
8. Bully using power.
9. Lesbian. If there are any "yes" answers, how can these ‘unmoral’ people represent us on religious matters?
