Umno man stands down as Amanah fields K Kangsar native

Umno Youth grassroots leader Syed Rosli Jamalullail said he has dropped his ambitions of contesting in the Kuala Kangsar by-election as an independent because Amanah is fielding a Kuala Kangsar native as its candidate.

This, he said, fulfilled his dream of having a local candidate in the fray, even though not from his party.

“My struggle has clearly reached its conclusion, where there is finally a local candidate being nominated.

“There is no longer any reason for me to continue with my intention to contest as a true Kuala Kangsar candidate,” he said in a statement today.

The Kuala Kangsar by-election nomination day is today. However, Syed Rosli was not among those confirming their candidacy this morning.

Instead, the parliamentary constituency will see a four-cornered fight between BN’s Mastura Mohd Yazid, PAS’ Dr Najihatussalehah Ahmad, Amanah's Ahmad Termizi Ramli, and independent candidate Izat Bukhary Ismail Bukhary.

Another Kuala Kangsar hopeful, Abu Backer Sidek Mohd Zan, had his nomination rejected.

Previously, Syed Rosli had expressed disappointment towards BN for choosing Mastura as its candidate, saying that she was not a Kuala Kangsar native.

Reiterating this in his statement today, he said he was confident there were many Kuala Kangsar folk who were intelligent and experienced leaders.

“This is proven when Amanah fielded a true son of Kuala Kangsar with an impressive resume as a nuclear physicist and is active in politics,” he said.

Despite his praises for Termizi however, Syed Rosli stressed that Umno was still his party and he would not betray Umno for all its contributions to him, the Malay race, and the country.

He said his support for Termizi was solely because the physicist was a Kuala Kangsar native, not because he was from Amanah. As for Mastura, he said he neither supported nor opposed her.

Although he did not agree with BN’s choice of candidate, Syed Rosli said, this did not mean he would support an opposition party.

“My message has already been heard and pondered by the party leadership, although as we all know, Umno leaders have large egos - perhaps from being in power for too long and never losing a general election - thus the voice of their party grassroots often go unheard.

“To the Kuala Kangsar Umno division, I know many are disappointed with the choosing on a Kuala Kangsar outsider as candidate, but I hope all of you would be patient,” he said.
He urged his supporters to vote for those “closest to our hearts” and can champion the people of Kuala Kangsar. -Mkini
