Aliran's 'Time to Act' clock a timely reminder to politicians

Penang-based social reform movement Aliran has launched a unique 'Time to Act' clock as a timely reminder to all politicians, from all sides of the political divide, to be mindful of core principles and values in their decision making.

Aliran president Francis Loh said the 9 3/4-inch aluminium clock "which is like no other”, is a commentary on the current state of the country.

Instead of numbers, the hands of the clock points towards words like peace, justice, freedom and solidarity. “These are also the core values of Aliran,” said Francis at a press conference in Penang today.

“Everyone is suffering the same disease; in all the hustle-bustle of going for elections, by-elections and the passing of this and that Act, we forget politics is serious business which needs time for reflection,” he added.

Timeless values

Aliran executive committee member Prema Devaraj said the clock was a timely reminder to all politicians from all sides of the political divide, whether federal and state, that their decisions, which affect the people, had to be made based on principles and values.

“All who aspire to be politicians, regardless of party, need such a reminder. These principles and core values are timeless.

“This clock is to inspire us to act. Perhaps some of you might be encouraged to get these clocks for yourselves or even gift them to some of our leaders.

“Given the current scenario, we encourage you to get these clocks in bulk!” she declared.

Accompanying Francis and Prema at the press conference were Aliran executive committee members Henry Loh and Andrew Wong.

“This clock takes us to a new dimension where time is all about principles and values so crucial to the nation,” said Henry.

"We are so short of these principles and values these days," he added.

He also explained that the clock was also a reminder for "democracy, courage, equality, respect, conscience, dignity, truth and diversity".

Four hundred pieces of the clocks are on sale for RM50 each, designed to raise funds for Aliran’s 39th anniversary.

The NGO is organising a fund-raising dinner at the Kuala Lumpur Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall on Saturday, July 23, which is targeted to raise about RM100,000.

Prominent human rights activist Ambiga Sreenivasan will attend as special guest speaker. National poet laureate A Said Samad will also be there.

Entertainers for the annual event include Az Samad, Azmyl Yunor and Orkes Padu, Aswara Dance Company, and Aliran Singers. -Mkini
