Muhyiddin to register new party, Dr M as chair

Former deputy prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin has confirmed he will be registering a new political party with the Registrar of Societies (ROS), ending speculation on his next move since he was sacked from Umno.
In a Facebook posting today, Muhyiddin said a meeting on this was held last night at the residence of former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
"I will be submitting an application to the ROS and register this new political party in the near future.
"Let's us all pray that the application is approved. InsyaAllah, we will do the best for the rakyat and the country," said Muhyiddin.
Muhyiddin also shared several photographs from the meeting attended by Mahathir, his son and former Kedah menteri besar Mukhriz and former Langkawi Wanita Umno leader Anina Saadudin.
Others also present were Gabungan Ketua Cawangan Malaysia (GKCM) president Kamarul Azman Habibur Rahman and student group Challenger leader Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman.
It is understood the registration documents will be submitted tomorrow.
When contacted, Syed Saddiq (photo) told Malaysiakini that all of them would be the first seven members of the party, which would be led by Muhyiddin as its president.
Mahathir would assume the position of party chairperson, he said.
"We all know that previously Tun (Mahathir) had talked about forming a new party.
"But at the meeting last night, there was an agreement that we would be the first seven members, as stated in the ROS form," Syed Saddiq said, adding that they expect to hand in the application by tomorrow.
He said formal discussions to set up the party had been going on for about a month after Muhyiddin and Mukhriz were sacked from Umno.

Syed Saddiq said this was because the duo, as well as the others who were eventually sacked from Umno, wanted to exhaust all internal party channels to voice their criticisms against the leadership of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.
"We need a new platform now. The most important thing is that we want to form a new party that will not repeat mistakes made in the past," he added.
Muhyiddin, Mukhriz, Anina and Kamarul Azman are among the Umno leaders who were sacked for their open criticisms of Najib and the RM2.6 billion 'donation' scandal. - Mkini
