Bersih chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah is safe and in good health, says inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar.
Khalid said this in response to concerns expressed over her well-being since her arrest under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 last week.
“I can understand that her family, friends and colleagues are worried. But they must also understand that we have a task to do, and it is being carried out within the scope of the law.
“I can assure them that Maria is safe and in good health,” Khalid told Malaysiakini today.
Khalid also claimed that exceptions have been made for the Bersih chairperson, that she has been provided with a mattress and pillow due to her feeling uncomfortable sleeping on the wooden floor in her cell.
Maria has also been given a copy of the Quran and is allowed to perform her prayers, he said.
Asked if other reading materials have also been provided, Khalid said her request is being looked into.
The police chief also reiterated that evidence gathered pertaining to her case cannot be revealed to the public, as demanded by certain quarters.
“Police detain someone and conduct an investigation if there is basis to do so.
“During the period the suspect is detained, we collect the evidence and later submit our investigation papers to the Attorney-General’s Chambers.
“If the AG's Chambers decides there is sufficient grounds for prosecution, then the evidence will be furnished in court.
“We cannot conduct a media trial by exposing everything now,” he added.
Therefore, Khalid urged all quarters to remain patient and allow the police to complete their investigations, and not to politicise the matter.
Maria is being investigated under Section 124C of the Penal Code for attempts to carry out activities detrimental to parliamentary democracy.
