KUALA LUMPUR: India has outlawed controversial preacher Zakir Naik’s Islamic Research Foundation (IRF) for five years.
The IRF has been banned for activities allegedly related to terror, The Indian Express reported.
Zakir, whose presence in Malaysia earlier this year caused divisions among the multireligious population, is alleged to have engaged in hate speech and terror propaganda.
Several non-Muslim groups had urged Putrajaya to bar him from speaking locally, saying he was known to disparage other religions. However, the government allowed him to speak to Muslims here.
It was even reported that the Terengganu Government had agreed to give three Kenyir Lake islands for Zakir’s use. Later, however, Menteri Besar Abdul Razif Abdul Rahman denied the islands would be given to Zakir.
Abdul Razif was quoted as saying: “This is a misunderstanding. Dr Zakir requested for the islands and we said okay because we felt it could boost Terengganu’s tourism. Dr Zakir is famous so we wanted to leverage on this.”
Zakir is already barred from entering the UK and Canada for his hate speech against other religions.
Zakir came under scrutiny when one of the perpetrators of the July 1 terror attack in Dhaka, Rohan Imtiaz, ran propaganda on Facebook last year quoting Zakir.
The Mumbai-based preacher, who is abroad, has not returned to India ever since the controversy began, according to The Indian Express.
The newspaper reported that India’s Cabinet approved a proposal to declare IRF as an ‘unlawful association’ under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act for five years.
“Law enforcement agencies will maintain strict surveillance of the activities of all establishments of the Foundation,” the report quoted a senior government official as saying.
The move comes after investigation by the Home Ministry found that the NGO allegedly had dubious links with Peace TV, an international Islamic channel accused of propagating terrorism.
Also, India’s Home Ministry said, Zakir, who heads IRF, had allegedly made many provocative speeches and engaged in terror propaganda, according to the report.
The Indian Express report said Maharashtra Police had also registered criminal cases against Zakir for his alleged involvement in radicalisation of youths and luring them into terror activities.
Zakir is also alleged to have transferred IRF’s foreign funds to Peace TV for making “objectionable” programmes. Most of the programmes, which were made in India, contained alleged hate speeches of Zakir, who had reportedly “urged all Muslims to be terrorists” through Peace TV, officials claimed.
An educational trust run by Zakir has already been prevented from receiving foreign funds and agencies are looking into its activities, the report added. -FMT
