Japan gives track inspection system to Malayan Railway for free

The RM3 million worth catenary eye system has been given in exchange for allowing Japanese railway system provider Meidensha to participate in the MRT project, says report.
ktm-meidenshaKUALA LUMPUR: Meidensha, the Japanese railway system provider, has delivered a catenary eye for track maintenance to Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB).
The catenary eye, worth RM3 million, has been provided free under Malaysia’s industrial collaboration programme with Japan, the Nikkei Asian Review (NAR) reported.
Under this collaborative programme, Meidensha has to provide the catenary eye free in exchange for participating in Malaysia’s maiden mass rapid transit, or MRT, project.
Meidensha has been the power supply and distribution system contractor for the RM21 billion MRT project since 2012.
According to the NAR report, KTMB said it could inspect at least 480km of rail track in an eight-hour period, compared with the current 2km using manual labour, by using the catenary eye mounted on a maintenance vehicle.
“The system will save us a lot of money,” Zailani Safari, KTMB’s chief executive, was quoted as saying by NAR on Tuesday.
Meidensha’s catenary eye consists of a high-speed camera, laser sensor and LED illumination linked to a computer. The visual imaging and data provided will enable maintenance engineers to monitor the condition of rail tracks remotely, the report said.
Malaysia had plans to procure an additional six catenary eyes to cover the country’s roughly 1,000km of track, Atsushi Oikubo, project director of Meiden Malaysia, a unit of Meidensha, was quoted as saying by NAR.
The 51km MRT has been partly open to the public since December and will become fully operational in July. Malaysia has embarked on a second MRT project that will also link suburbs to the capital. -FMT
