Lab technology specialist Siti Hajar Ibrahim, 30, was on her way home from work at about 7pm when she encountered the flood.
“The water level was low and I told myself let’s just get past this stretch,” she said.
“My car engine suddenly died and as I was about to call my insurance agent, water started seeping inside.”
Siti Hajar attempted to open the door but to no avail.
“I tried a few times and finally managed to open it. I grabbed my handphone and as soon as I was out of my car, the water was up to my waist,” she said.
“Safety was my only concern.”
Siti Hajar left her personal belongings — handbag and accessories — behind and headed for the nearest shelter under the Sprint Highway flyover.
In 15 minutes,  her car was under water in the blink of an eye.
“It all happened so fast. In 30 seconds, the water level went from below my knees to my waist,” she said.
“I came out of the car at 5.51pm and by 6.06pm it was nowhere to be seen.”
Siti Hajar, who works at an office in Jalan Persiaran Barat, said the route she took was the quickest way home.
“I live in Ukay Perdana and my drive back during peak hours takes about an hour. I got home yesterday at midnight,” she said.
When the rain stopped and the water level subsided at 7.30pm, she headed back to her car which was badly damaged.
“The car appeared to have some minor knocks and ended up a few metres from where it had stalled,” she said.
“I grabbed my belongings and waited for my husband to fetch me.”
The total damage to her Proton Persona has not been ascertained but Siti Hajar is glad her nightmare is over.
“If I reacted a few seconds later, it might have been worse,” she said.
Heavy rain on Tuesday evening flooded parts of Kuala Lumpur and Petaling Jaya, brining traffic to a halt.
The Spring Highway-Jalan Dato Abu Bakar intersection was one of the worst affected, besides Jalan Sultan Ismail, Jalan Pantai Baru and several stretches along the Federal Highway.
The water at most areas was less than 1m deep but the Sprint Highway-Jalan Dato Abu Bakar underpass saw the level rising to more than a metre high.
