Dr Mahathir Mohamad has now trained his guns on Defence Minister Hishammuddin Hussein after the latter urged the authorities to investigate the former premier and his children's wealth.
Hishammuddin made the call after Mahathir claimed that Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi failed to provide a clear answer on the RM230 million in his bank account when he declared his wealth to the former premier in 1996.
"We should find out more about the wealth of a certain minister who suggested... (that his and his children's wealth be investigated) because I mentioned what Zahid had...
"So now Hisham wants me to be raided and investigated. I suggest we should also (raid) Hisham," Mahathir told reporters in Parliament this afternoon.
Following the former premier's accusation, Zahid said he was willing to be investigated. He also explained that his wealth was accumulated during his time in the corporate sector.
Earlier today, Malaysiakini reported that the Inland Revenue Board (IRB) had raided companies linked to Mahathir's sons Mukhriz, Mokhzani and Mirzan.
On Sunday, Hishammuddin, who is Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's cousin, said Mahathir was no angel when he was in power.
"Don't let us just dance to their rhythm. Tun Mahathir should also be investigated (on his and his family’s wealth)," he was quoted as saying by Utusan Malaysia during an Umno event in Perlis.
Apart from Hishammuddin, Tourism and Culture Minister Nazri Abdul Aziz also urged the authorities to probe Mahathir and his children.
"We also want to know how his sons suddenly became rich," he had said.
Mahathir has repeatedly denied that his sons benefited from his position or that his administration was replete with corruption and abuse of power. Mkini
