CRITICIZED FOR BEING TOO SIMPLE, JOHOR PRINCESS’ CONTROVERSIAL WEDDING DRESS DESIGNED BY HER AUNT, WOVEN BY PRISONERS

KUALA LUMPUR – Many had wondered who was the designer behind the simple, yet stylish baju kurung teluk belanga Johor princess Tunku Tun Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah Sultan Ibrahim wore on her wedding day for the ‘istiadat bersanding’.
Which famous fashion personality was behind it? Was it a local couturist? Was the cloth from a glamorous fashion capital?
The designer turned out to be none other than her aunt, Tengku Puan Pahang, Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah, while the material was woven by inmates from Pahang’s Penor prison.
In a twitter post, Tunku Azizah revealed that her niece, Tunku Aminah, wore a baju kurung teluk belanga made out of Tenun Pahang DiRaja fabric.
The material, she said, was woven by inmates from the Penor prison.
“At my niece’s wedding, Tunku Tun Aminah is wearing baju kurung made out of Tenun Pahang DiRaja, designed by me. (It) was woven by the inmates from Penor prison,” she tweeted, at the same time posting photos taken during the ceremony.
Created using traditional looms showcasing various decorative textiles enhanced with unique manufacturing techniques, the Tenun Pahang DiRaja is a hand-woven high quality fabric.
It was originally called Tenun Pahang but its mark of excellence in producing exclusive textiles, especially for the Pahang royalty had it granted as royal in 2006 by Pahang Sultan, Sultan Ahmad Shah.
There are more than 200 inmates focusing on weaving Tenun Pahang Diraja from the Bentong and Penor prisons in Pahang, songket from the Marang prison and correctional centre in Dungun, Terengganu, and batik from the Pengkalan Chepa correctional centre in Machang, Kelantan.
Tunku Azizah is a frequent visitor to Penor Prison, and supports the inmates in their efforts to produce Tenun Pahang.
The Johor princess was married off to Dutchman Dennis Muhammad Abdullah on Monday in a ceremony steeped in Johor royal tradition.
She praised for having a traditional yet simple wedding ceremony at Istana Bukit Serene.
The new couple then had their bersanding ceremony at the Throne Room of the Istana Besar Johor Baru.
