Gov't awards RM1.6m in prize money and project funds to 'best villages'

The government awarded project funding and prize money worth a total of RM1.6 million to village committees who participated in the best village contest.
The biggest prize at the Anugerah Desa Perdana 2017 (Prime Village Award) - won by Kampung Baru Kemasik, Terengganu - was RM100,000 in prize money and RM600,000 in project funding.
Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak presented the prizes to the winners today at the prize giving ceremony in Putra World Trade Centre.
Twenty-three villages were shortlisted from the initial 582 participating villages from all 14 states of Malaysia, competing to win the prizes of the Prime Village Award at its final national level.
There were three main categories-- traditional villages, Orang Asli villages, and long houses.
A selection process based on eight criteria - including patriotism, as well as leadership and administration - was carried out to evaluate the overall organisation of each village to determine the respective winners of each category.
In the traditional village category, the first and second prizes went to Kampung Baru Temasik in Terengganu and Kampung Parit Puteri Menangis in Johor. Kampung Kuala Slim in Perak and Kampung Seri Mahkota in Pahang both won the third prize.
As for the Orang Asli village category, the first, second and third prizes went to Kampung Orang Asli Pengkalan Tereh in Johor, Kampung Orang Asli Bukit Tadom in Selangor and Kampung Orang Asli Pos Hendrop in Kelantan respectively.
The long house category saw the first, second and third prizes going to Rumah Bengau in Kapit, Rumah Satu in Limbang and Rumah Along Nk Kang in Entebar Sri Aman.
The top prize for both the Orang Asli and long house categories were RM50,000 cash prize, and RM100,000 in project funding.
Earlier in his speech, Najib announced that JKKK discount cards will be given to the committee members.
A list of discounts and benefits, including for dining and hotels, will be available for cardholders.
He also announced that the cabinet has approved a group life insurance scheme from the Rural and Regional Development Ministry for 265,000 committee members.

Under the scheme, the government will pay RM10 while each will pay JKKK RM7 per month.
The policy offers compensation of RM5,000 for death caused by accident and RM2,500 for natural death.
"Gentlemen, you are able to afford this. If we give this for free you won't appreciate it," he joked. - Mkini
