Khalid Abu Bakar will retire on Sept 5 when he turns 60, after spending four years as the nation's top cop.
He told Berita Harian that his decision to retire was his own.
"This is my own decision. It is time for me to take a break," he said.
Khalid began his policing career in 1976. He was appointed inspector-general of police in 2013.
