The National Registration Department wants documentary proof of allegations that Penang-born businessperson Jho Low has dual citizenship.

It has asked Tanjong MP Ng Wei Aik, who filed a complaint on the matter, to furnish a copy of documents showing Low is a citizen of St Kitts and Nevis, as well as his passport from the Caribbean nation.

NRD director Mohamad Shukri Nawi in a letter to Ng dated July 25, said the documents were “very important to support the stripping (of Low’s) Malaysian citizenship.”

Mohamad Shukri said the documents would also help the department conclude its probe, and hoped Ng would cooperate.

Low’s alleged St Kitts and Nevis citizenship was brought to light by the US Department of Justice (DOJ) in June.

Previously it was also alleged that the 1MDB-linked businessperson had a US passport.

Ng in a press conference in the Parliament media room today said the NRD’s request for assistance was “amusing.”

“How will Low give me the documents when he is missing and afraid to return to Malaysia.

“This is a tactic to delay investigations into Low,” the DAP lawmaker said.

He said the NRD, Home Ministry, or the Foreign Ministry should communicate with the DOJ to get the evidence instead of asking him for it.

Low is one of several individuals the DOJ claims had misappropriated 1MDB funds.

Among others, he is accused of using 1MDB monies to purchase a yacht, a jet, as well as jewellery, including for Australian model Miranda Kerr.
