The nation is reeling in anguish over the RCI findings and the mounting plans to further investigate the individuals being named and shamed is not going down well, particularly within the Malay segment of the country's population.
Do the leaders and power brokers within the hallways of Barisan Nasional and especially Umno not know that this plot to nail Dr Mahathir Mohamad is going to precipitate into a huge liability for the leadership of BN?
The truth is if Mahathir is to be dragged in the mud for something that happened three decades ago, then the question of sins of omission will rise to the fore of this nation's already deeply troubled and riddled political landscape since the first breaking news over 1MDB.
Moreover, why did the politicians within Umno and BN not stand up, question and fight for truth to prevail at the height of the forex saga or in the time since then?
Did they keep silent for their own self-centred political survival and meteoric progress?
The fact that they kept silent affirms that they are equally guilty of the plot to do wrong to the entire nation. Therefore, should all those guilty of sealed lips and blinkered eyes not be hauled up for their gross sins of omission?
We need to be mindful that the fight against corruption does not emerge victorious with this RCI saga. Neither does it give impetus to clean up our country's political administration after decades of corruption and wastages.
In fact, crucifying Mahathir is going to drive a deep dagger into the psyche of the population that will, in all probability, take decades more to heal and at a huge price. We must be wary of the fact that the new media is going to leave ugly scars that cannot be hidden from the global community.
Already the social landscape is rife with jeers that going after Mahathir is a political and personal vendetta. Hence, BN, despite what the leaders in Umno claim, would have divided the nation to an extent that it will add to the vulnerability of Najib's leadership and his oarsmen.- Mkini
