KOTA KINABALU: The new Sandakan Integrated Bus Terminal, to be launched soon, is expected to give much-needed comfort to travellers as well as visitors, said Chief Minister Musa Aman.
Speaking to reporters after visiting the complex on Sunday, Musa said the project was funded by both the federal and state governments. It is now in the final phase of construction.
The cost of the project was RM25.2 million, with RM16.2 million given by the federal government and RM9 million by the Sabah government.
“I am pleased the project is coming along very well.
“The complex, when completed, will provide wide and comfortable spaces for buses, passengers as well as ample parking space for visitors,” he said.
Musa, who is also Sungai Sibuga assemblyman, said the government had actually received many requests from the people to provide Sandakan with a proper and modern bus terminal, especially because bus transportation is essential to the people here.
He said the complex, which is situated at Mile 1½ in Sandakan will be able to cater to a bigger number of buses coming in and going out of Sandakan more efficiently once the project is completed.
He said the government is always listening and planning projects based on the needs of the people, especially infrastructure development projects.
“This proves that the BN government is always sensitive to the needs and wellbeing of the people,” he said.
Meanwhile, according to Sandakan Municipal Council president James Wong, the complex is already 90% complete except for the exterior works and installation of the Terminal Broadcasting System (TBS), the first in the state to use the system.
“The new terminal will be equipped with a computerised system that will enable passengers to buy tickets online. This will eliminate ‘touts’, which is a problem here.”
The complex, he said, will have 12 main bus lanes, retail space, kiosks, a food court, waiting areas, parking spaces as well as separate areas for cargo and passengers.
It is capable of handling 30 to 50 buses daily and up to 70 buses during the peak seasons. -FMT
