PKR was founded following Dr Mahathir Mohamad's decision to sack his then heir-apparent Anwar Ibrahim in 1998.
Two decades later, Mahathir, who now heads the opposition coalition Pakatan Harapan, could find himself contesting under the party's ticket.
According to sources from various parties, a consensus was reached during Harapan's presidential council meeting on Tuesday to field the coalition's candidates under the PKR logo in the coming general election.
A final decision is expected to be reached at next week's meeting after the four parties consult their respective leaders and members on the matter.
Following Tuesday's meeting, Mahathir said the presidential council had reached a consensus and a decision would be made next week.
However, he declined to reveal which logo would be used.
Apart from PKR, sources claimed that Amanah's logo is also being considered.
However, there are reservations about using the DAP’s rocket as it could backfire.
“If we use DAP's logo, it might attract a lot of slanders. If we use Bersatu's logo, we are worried that later, all of us would be banned,” said one source on condition of anonymity.
However, sources also indicated that the proposal could meet with resistance from the grassroots, who would want their candidates to contest under their respective party logos.
In view of this, the four parties have been given a week to discuss the matter and persuade their grassroots to agree to the proposal.
When contacted, several DAP national leaders refused to comment on the issue but stressed that there was no final decision yet.
Meanwhile, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said he did not attend the presidential council meeting as he was at his corruption trial in Penang.
“The matter has not been finalised. DAP will use our own logo,” he insisted. -Mkini
