The High Court has imposed an eight-year jail term on a Datin who was found guilty of brutally abusing her domestic helper by a lower court, but handed only a good behaviour bond.
Judicial commissioner Tun Majid Tun Hamzah, in allowing the prosecutor's review of the sentence, said the Sessions Court had wrongly exercised its discretion to impose the bond.
The court also ordered Rozita Mohamad Ali, 44, to serve the sentence starting today, while dismissing her application for a stay pending appeal.
On March 15, Rozita had pleaded guilty to causing grievous hurt to Suyanti Sutrinso, 19, with, among others, a knife, a floor mop, umbrella, iron rod and cloth hanger.
Following this, Judge Mohammed Mokhzani Mokhtar sentenced her to an RM20,000 good behaviour bond for five years.
This sparked public outrage and prosecutors immediately filed an appeal. -Mkini
