Penang tunnel: Azeez files police report over RM3m claim

Umno lawmaker Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim has filed a police report over an allegation that he received RM3 million from Consortium Zenith Construction Sdn Bhd for “consultancy work” in relation to the Penang undersea tunnel.
The Baling MP filed the report with the Selangor police headquarters in Shah Alam this morning. He was accompanied by some 50 supporters.
According to Utusan Online, Azeez also met with Selangor police chief Mazlan Mansor for about an hour.
On Feb 26, Malaysiakini reported that Zenith had issued letters of demand to the Umno supreme council member and a businessperson for RM3 million and RM19 million respectively.
The following day, MACC, which is probing the undersea tunnel, arrested the 37-year-old businessperson.
According to reports, the businessperson, who has been remanded to facilitate investigations, had received the sum from the construction firm after claiming he was able to halt the MACC probe.
On the same day, Azeez, who is also Tabung Haji chairperson, confirmed receiving the letter of demand but dismissed its contents as untrue.
He also denied receiving RM3 million from Zenith.
"I have never met (Zenith CEO) Zarul Ahmad Mohd Zulkifli nor have I had dealings with the construction company," he told Malaysiakini.
Yesterday, Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng questioned why Azeez has not been arrested.
“Why the double standards? Why is MACC playing favourites? Are you genuinely trying to investigate corruption?" he asked.
Zenith, a special purpose vehicle, was formed in 2013 to implement the project after it was awarded the RM6.3 billion tunnel project via an open tender process called by the Penang government.
Early this year, the MACC initiated a major probe on Zenith and the tunnel project, querying 70 and arresting four, including two high-ranking executives with "datuk" titles to assist in their probe.
A MACC source told the media that the probe involved alleged kickbacks to politicians. -Mkini
