Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad today brushed aside the new political alliance between Umno and PAS with his trademark sarcasm.
He said while Malaysian law forbids same-sex marriages, there are no such restrictions on political marriages.
"If they want to unite, they can unite. If they want to get married, go ahead and get married. We are a free country... (Except for a man) to get married to a man, you can't do that here.
"They want to get married (with each other), it is okay," he told reporters in Parliament today.
Last Tuesday, Umno and PAS formalised their cooperation which had proven to be effective in the past two by-elections in Cameron Highlands and Semenyih.
Acting Umno chairperson Mohamad Hasan had described the alliance as a “marriage” with Umno sending a “ring” to PAS during the Sungai Kandis by-election, before the two parties became engaged in Seri Setia.
Visit to Beijing
On a separate matter, Mahathir also said that his visit to China next month will be an opportunity to discuss how Malaysia could gain benefit from its policies, including the One Belt One Road (Obor) initiative.
"Whether you like it or not, China is a big power," he said on concerns that Obor had left many countries indebted to Beijing.
"We have to take their policies into consideration, and find out how we can benefit from those policies.
"Not all the policies are bad for us. Some can be very good. Up to us to find what is good for us and make use of it."
Last month, Mahathir reportedly became the first world leader to confirm his attendance at China’s second Obor summit.
Among others, it was reported that Beijing will reexamine project viability with participating countries at the Belt and Road Forum, to be held on April 26 and 27. - Mkini
