KTM offers 20% discount card to bring back passengers

KUALA LUMPUR: The national railway, KTM, has introduced a discount card, KTM XTRA20, to bring back passengers by offering users a 20% discount at every train station.
Transport Minister Loke Siew Fook said KTM passengers could enjoy savings of up to RM60 a month on their transport costs. “We want to encourage people to use public transport,” he said.
Loke said a total of 20,000 KTM XTRA20 cards would be handed out, and RM3 charged per card after that.
The ministry hopes to increase the number of passengers from 90,000 to 108,000 in a day by this year.
Loke said the number of passengers on KTM services had falled after the KTM fare rate was raised from 11 sen to 15 sen per kilometre in 2016. This had affected the middle class and B40 low-income group.
He said passenger numbers had fallen from 50 million a year in 2015 to 32 million last year. Besides the fare increase, the fall in numbers could also be due to the upgrading of tracks, which had caused delays, and the competition from MRT, he said.
Loke said the arrival time of KTM commuter trains would be displayed live through an open digital platform by May or June, as well as a KTMB mobile application which is almost completed. - FMT
