Harapan won't abuse gov't machinery in Rantau – Anwar

PKR president Anwar Ibrahim assures that Pakatan Harapan will not use government machinery in the Rantau by-election.
"We will not use government machinery to garner votes," Anwar said at a press conference after nominations for the by-election were completed.
He said this when asked to comment on Bersih's complaint that PKR's Miri MP Michael Teo had committed an election offence by distributing food coupons to Rantau school children on Thursday.
Anwar said that was Bersih's opinion, and he would leave the matter to the Election Commission.
He also questioned why Umno allegedly giving money to voters during house to house visits was not raised as a possible offence.
The EC has said that Teo's actions should be considered treating, which is an offence under the Election Offences Act if committed before, during, or after an election.
However, the timing of Teo's contribution lands it in a legal gray area, as "before" an election is not clearly defined.
Meanwhile, Anwar said the Harapan campaign would focus on what the coalition can do for the people of Rantau, as well as the failure of BN to develop the town.
The Rantau by-election is a four-corned fight between PKR's Dr S Streram, Umno acting president Mohamad Hasan, and independent candidates R Malar and Mohd Nor Yasin. - Mkini
