Wan Azizah: We’ll look into salaries of grads in govt service

Deputy Prime Minister Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.
KUALA LUMPUR: The federal government will carry out a comprehensive study on the issue of salaries for graduates going into government service, Deputy Prime Minister Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail said today.
She said the government took note of data on the low salary received by the new undergraduates, as stated in Bank Negara Malaysia’s annual report for 2018.
The report showed that starting salaries of degree-holders had fallen over the years, after adjusting for inflation.
“We did discuss the issue of undergraduates and the salary they receive now compared to the income they received several years ago,” Wan Azizah said today.
“Looking at the passage of time, we have to undertake a comprehensive study, taking into account all the facts to draw up a policy to champion the cause of the younger generation, especially what needs to be tackled first.
“When we are in a position to help as a whole, we will do it,” she told reporters after launching the KTM EXTRA20, a discount card for KTM passengers.
The Bank Negara report showed that a new graduate with a diploma earned RM1,376 in 2018 (compared with RM1,458 in 2010) while a holder of a master’s degree earned RM2,923 (compared with RM2,707).
However the Malaysian Employers Federation had countered that the starting salary for new graduates in the private sector had increased gradually. It said a diploma holder could earn RM1,661 in 2018 compared with RM1,458 in 2010, bachelor’s degree holders RM2,393 (previously RM1,993) and master’s degree holder RM3,267 (RM2,923).
MEF said the data came from its salary study in 2010 and 2018.
‘Courts will decide on live telecast of Najib’s trial’
On a separate issue, Wan Azizah said the government would leave it to the courts to decide whether to allow a live telecasst of trial of former prime minister Najib Razak on charges of embezzlement and abuse of power involving RM42 million in funds belonging to SRC International Sdn Bhd.
“That is under the jurisdiction of the courts. We will let the courts decide although we feel the people want to know how the trial of Datuk Seri Najib is proceeding,” she added. - FMT
