EC officials lodged report against me, Najib reminds Art Harun

Former prime minister Najib Razak.
PETALING JAYA: Former prime minister Najib Razak has reminded Azhar Harun that Election Commission (EC) officers could report election offences on their own to the relevant authorities amid allegations of vote-buying by Pakatan Harapan in the Semenyih by-election.
Speaking to FMT, Najib said Azhar (also known as Art Harun) should remember that EC officers had previously lodged a police report against him for allegedly campaigning on the day of the Sungai Kandis by-election after he made a Facebook post on polling day.
He was responding to the EC chairman’s comments in which he urged Najib to be proactive in lodging reports with the police or Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission if he had direct information on any alleged election offence.
This came after Najib raised the issue of vote buying in the Semenyih by-election, citing reports of allocations for the constituency being announced by a federal minister and a lucky draw being organised at the same event.
Najib also raised the incident where Semenyih residents were given hampers and offer letters for home repairs.
PPBM president Muhyiddin Yassin had admitted to these gifts and offer letter but said these did not break any laws.
Azhar had said this could constitute an election offence and could be grounds for the losing party to challenge the results of the by-election.
“The bottom line is that EC must not allow such blatant election offences, which they or the public know about to go unpunished.
“They must ensure that action is taken,” said Najib.
The Pekan MP added the apparent lack of action from EC over the many high-profile election offences by PH during the Cameron Highlands by-election were already undermining Azhar’s credibility as EC chairman.
“Any further perceived inaction from the EC in this Semenyih by-election would just strengthen the public’s perception that the EC is biased,” said Najib. - FMT
