Declaring wealth will create jealousy, says PAS citing hadith

PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man.
KUALA LUMPUR: PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man today cited a hadith (prophetic tradition) in stating the party’s opposition to a special motion to compel MPs to declare their wealth.
He said the hadith warns that going public with one’s wealth could harm personal safety and create jealousy.
He said any move to have MPs declare their wealth should be through legislation, adding that there were mechanisms in place.
“And all incomes are reported every year to the Inland Revenue Board,” he said.
De facto law minister Liew Vui Keong today tabled a motion for all MPs, along with their spouses and children, to declare their assets by Oct 1.
“Those who falsify their assets are liable under the Penal Code,” he said when reading the motion in the Dewan Rakyat.
He said the move is in accordance with the principles of accountability and transparency.
But the plan was criticised by Umno and PAS MPs, saying there had been no follow-up action by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission after ruling that MPs must declare their wealth to the agency last year.
They also said the manner in which the motion was raised in the house today is not according to law.
“I will not follow the motion. Let action be taken because it is based on an irregularity,” said Takiyuddin Hassan (PAS-Kota Bharu).
Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar (GPS-Santubong) said the motion for asset declaration should have been brought to the attorney-general first, while Azalina Othman Said (BN-Pengerang) questioned why the government chose not to legislate asset declaration as a new law or through an amendment in the MACC Act. - FMT
