Inspector-General of Police Abdul Hamid Bador confirmed that authorities are still working to bringing home Nor Mahmudah Ahmad (above), the widow of slain Islamic State (IS) terrorist Muhammad Wanndy Mohd Jedi, from Syria.
"On the issue of bringing her back from Syria, we are having a problem of bypassing certain areas in Syria where there are three areas controlled by different parties, namely the Syrian government, the US-backed coalition and IS," he said.
"We have to engage with foreign agencies to help us get Malaysians out. We are also talking to the International Red Crescent to help organise it," said Hamid, on the occasion of the visit by the Chief Secretary to the Government Ismail Bakar to Bukit Aman's Special Action Unit.
Nor Mahmudah has been pleading to return to Malaysia following the deaths of her three sons in a bombing in October 2018.
Her late husband Wanndy was one of the top recruiters for the IS terror group in Iraq and Syria. He was killed in a US drone attack in April 2017 in Raqqa, then the Syrian capital of the IS network.
"She is still a citizen of Malaysia, and we are obliged to help her," said Hamid.
"We will consider what action is to be taken against her when she arrives back in Malaysia. This applies not only to Wanndy's family, but to all those who are under the detention of certain parties (in Syria)," he added.
Nor Mahmudah reportedly remarried a Belgian IS fighter.
Meanwhile, on another issue, Hamid said there are no strong leads suggesting sabotage in the investigation into the systems glitch at KLIA on Aug 21.
"We are still consulting experts in this field to get a better understanding of the issue.
"We want to get to the bottom of the matter as soon as possible, and the investigation is ongoing," he said.
Three days ago, Hamid said police would be calling up several individuals to assist in the investigation.
So far police have recorded statements from 12 Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) staff in connection with the incident. - Mkini
