Dr Wee wants Education Ministry to set clear guidelines on move to abolish streaming in schools

KUALA LUMPUR: MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong has urged the Education Ministry to be clear about its future plans if it decides to abolish the Arts and Science streams in Form Four.
The Ayer Hitam MP expressed concern that the move would create bigger problems for students if made without proper planning.
"There are several courses where you need core subjects. So how far is the ministry's preparedness in making this huge paradigm shift in terms of subjects," he questioned during the Education Ministry's winding up session of Budget 2020 on Tuesday (Oct 29).
Dr Wee said that certain courses like law require some basic subjects before a student can enrol into such programmes.
"We would like to know if there are any clear guidelines," he said.
To this, Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik said the ministry was responsible in developing the talents of students based on their capabilities and interests.
He said that the ministry would monitor the implementation and added that students would be allowed to choose subjects from the Arts or Science streams.
Earlier, several Opposition leaders walked out of the hall in the Dewan Rakyat at about 9pm as they were dissatisfied with Maszlee for refusing to take questions during his winding-up speech.
Opposition leader Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said that no other minister had ever refused to take questions from MPs during their winding-up speech.
"It has never happened before. Other (Pakatan Harapan) MPs made way for questions.
"It is pointless if we can't ask for explanations," he said to reporters at the Parliament lobby.
Besides Ismail, other MPs who joined the walkout were Pontian MP Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan, Tanjong Karang MP Tan Sri Noh Omar and Padang Terap MP Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid.- Star
