The police have submitted their investigations papers to the Attorney-General’s Chambers on those detained under Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 over purported links to the defunct Sri Lankan rebel group Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).
Bukit Aman’s Special Branch Counter-Terrorism Division principal assistant director Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay said it is now up to the attorney-general whether to charge those detained or to release them.
“Our part is already finished. We have completed and submitted the investigation papers to the attorney-general.
“So the attorney-general will take a look. Maybe he needs some time to go through.
“It is up to the attorney-general whether he wants to charge them or release them,” Ayob Khan said to reporters today at the Kuala Lumpur police headquarters (IPKKL).
Family members of those detained were allowed two hours to visit their loved ones at the IPKKL today in light of the Deepavali celebration.
Among those who were detained under Sosma include former and current members of DAP, PKR and PAS.
They include DAP's Seremban Jaya assemblyperson P Gunasekaran and Gadek assemblyperson G Saminathan.
The LTTE, which fought against the Sri Lankan government for the independence of its Tamil-majority region, was defeated in 2009.
The Tamil cause in Sri Lanka receives sympathy from the Tamil diaspora but the LTTE is considered by Malaysia to be a terrorist organisation.
