Ministry engaging both parties to solve UM controversy amicably - Teo

The Education Ministry is engaging with both sides of the Universiti Malaya student protest controversy, Deputy Education Minister Teo Nie Ching said today.
Teo (photo) said the ministry wants to solve the issue amicably.
“We are still in the process of engaging both parties to solve this matter amicably. We need both sides to engage and not to be enraged.
“Please wait for the ministry’s announcement,” said Teo after attending the McDonald’s “Back-to-School” programme launch at SK Klang Gate in Gombak, Kuala Lumpur.
UM student Wong Yan Ke displayed a placard after receiving his scroll during the varsity’s graduation ceremony on Monday, demanding for UM vice-chancellor Abdul Rahim Hashim to resign for his controversial speech at the Malay Dignity Congress earlier this month.
After the solo protest, Wong claimed that his academic transcript was being withheld by UM on flimsy grounds.
When asked to comment on the varsity’s action, the deputy minister said she personally didn’t agree with it.
She also stated that the Education Ministry has yet to receive any information regarding the hacking of the UM payment website.
She added that she would only comment on it after getting more information regarding the issue.
“We haven’t received a report from UM. I will wait for the report before giving my comment, I only read about it this morning.”
On a separate issue, Teo refused to comment on the controversial comic book 'Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) for Win Winism’ being banned from schools by the Education Ministry.
“Everyone has the right to express their own opinions …. this is their right and freedom.”
The comic book was a collaboration between Asia Comics and Cultural Museum curator Hew Kuan Yew and local artist Chong Po Ling, popularly known as Tomato.
The Bahasa Malaysia version of the comic book was distributed for free to national and vernacular secondary schools.
Yesterday, Education Minister Maszlee Malik said there was no permission for the comic book to be distributed in schools. - Mkini
