With the Umno-PAS alliance, Pakatan Harapan’s Mustapa Mohamed has become the sole opposition assemblyperson in the PAS-controlled Kelantan government.
Yesterday, the Air Lanas assemblyperson vowed to continue to serve and speak up for his constituents.
“There is no problem. We practice mature politics. What is most important is to work for the people and country, and to debate (in the state assembly) in a polite manner.
“As we head towards the year 2020, we need to practice mature politics. If we do that we will have no problems. By speaking up against what is wrong and supporting what is right,” he was quoted as saying in the Malay language news outlet Sinar Harian.
“All my friends, whether from PAS or Umno, have been in politics for a long time. If they don’t support any motions that I bring to the table, that is the principle of democracy,” the Bersatu politician added.
Formerly with Umno, Mustapa had served as the international trade and industry minister for nine years during previous BN government.
He defected to Bersatu in October last year, making him the first Umno MP to do so.
Of the 45 Kelantan state seats, PAS makes up 37, BN (Umno) has seven while Mustapa represents Harapan.
Earlier this week, BN's Kok Lanas assemblyperson Md Alwi Che Ahmad announced his resignation as opposition leader following the PAS-Umno charter.
“Starting today after our charter, Kelantan will no longer have an opposition leader because I resign and all of us (BN assemblypersons) now support the state government,” Alwi had said during the state assembly. - Mkini
