UM thwarts renewed protest attempt against VC

The Universiti Malaya (UM) management has thwarted renewed protest attempt against its vice-chancellor Abdul Rahim Hashim.
This is after student activist Wong Yan Ke, while receiving his graduation ceremony, unfurled a banner accusing Abdul Rahim of racism and calling for his resignation.
The university's auxiliary police today stopped another student activist Edan Kon Hua En (photo) from entering Dewan Tunku Canselor in UM for the graduation ceremony in anticipation of a similar stunt.
Kon, when contacted, said he was interrogated by the auxiliary police over a placard he was carrying.
"Before I entered the hall, I was carrying a placard which I took a photograph with... While in line to enter the hall, I was stopped by auxiliary police and segregated.
"They asked about Wong's protest yesterday and whether I will also be protesting. I did not answer. After that they confiscated my banner," the former UM Association of New Youth chairperson told Malaysiakini.
He asked the university management later did not allow him to take his graduation scroll despite assurances that he will not stage any protest.
UM had lodged a police report against Wong over the protest yesterday.
Wong was protesting against Rahim's speech during the Malay Dignity Congress rally on Oct 6.
In his speech, Rahim allegedly claimed the change in government after GE14 had eliminated Malay political dominance and asserted that Malay privileges were being questioned.
Rahim is also alleged to have warned others not to challenge the social contract. - Mkini
