Dr M needs a new game plan, says MP

Dr Mahathir Mohamad, chairman of Pakatan Harapan and PPBM, campaigned for the PH candidate Karmaine Sardini.
PETALING JAYA: A PKR MP today suggested Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad come up with a new game plan following Pakatan Harapan’s humiliating loss at the Tanjung Piai by-elections last night.
Barisan Nasional trounced the ruling coalition by a convincing 15,086-vote majority which saw them wrest back the parliamentary seat it lost in the May 2018 general election.
Among the factors that contributed to the massive defeat is the lack of systematic reforms of Parliament, said the MP for Subang, Wong Chen.
He said there had been no reduction of the prime minister’s excessive powers, while Putrajaya has yet to implement proper separation of powers.
Other factors that led to the loss he said was that the “economy was in a rut”, while there are no concrete steps to address the relatively high cost of living.
The nation, Wong Chen said, has also been “gripped and distracted” by racial issues and tensions.
“In my humble opinion, the prime minister must realise that he has to have a new game plan soon.
“On that front, he should consider fully embracing reforms or risk leading us to more defeats,” he wrote.
Wong Chen went on to describe Tanjung Piai a “rude and big wake up call” to PH, although he said that Mahathir has to shoulder the majority of the blame .
Many political commentators, he said, were of the view that the Tanjung Piai by-election was some sort of a referendum on Mahathir’s leadership.
“I tend to agree with this point of view.”
He also said that while one can blame the performance of some ministers over the loss, but like in all organisations, the chief executive is mostly responsible.
“So the big chunk of the blame has to still land in Dr Mahathir’s lap.” - FMT
