For Mahathir’s next birthday, a movie on his life and times

Fauziah Latif and Azhar Amir will play Dr Siti Hasmah Ali and Dr Mahathir Mohamad in a new biographical movie.
PETALING JAYA: A biographical movie on Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s life and times, entitled “Mahathir: The Journey”,is expected to be screened in July next year, in time for his 95th birthday.
The film’s director, Mohamad Hatta Azad Khan, said shooting will begin in December is expected to span two months at locations that will include Kuala Lumpur, Kelantan, Langkawi, Alor Setar, Penang and Japan.
Dr Mahathir and his wife Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali will be played by Azhar Amir and Fauziah Latiff.
Others in the cast include Hilal Azman (as PKR president Anwar Ibrahim), Izzat Mustaq (as youth and sports minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman), Afieq Hussain (as Mahathir’s son Mukhriz), Muhamad Harminder Singh (as communications minister Gobind Singh Deo), Dian P. Ramlee (as deputy prime minister Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, who is Anwar’s wife) and Lisdawati (Permatang Pauh MP Nurul Izzah Anwar, daughter of Anwar and Wan Azizah).
The film will feature 29 characters well known in the political scene.
Production head Taha Wahid said the movie will refrain from politics. “Put aside politics, we are filmmakers, not politicians.” He added that film is meant to be a tribute to Mahathir.
The cast of the film ‘Mahathir: The Journey’ in Kuala Lumpur today. The film will feature 29 Malaysian political figures.
Hatta said that the cast had to fully immerse themselves in research in order to better understand the characters they were playing.
“We told them that they have to go through the published works, the recordings, the articles, YouTube videos and books before we started shooting.
“With the rehearsals, we can fine-tune the characters,” he said. Rehearsals are expected to take about a week.
The film is presented by Reliance Media, and has a budget of about RM6 million.- FMT
