Yoursay: Harapan bracing for backlash in Saturday’s by-election

YOURSAY | ‘A loss would be a reminder to Dr M that we might be fooled, but we are not fools all the time.’
Vijay47: DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang, we cannot have Pakatan Harapan win this round. Harapan must lose.

If they won, it would be continued arrogance from the perception of being indispensable whatever it does, and further entrenchment of injustice along racial and religious lines.
On the other hand, a loss would be a sharp reminder to Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad that fools as we might be, we are not fools all the time.
DAP’s biggest fault and mistake was that in wanting to be accepted by Malays, you kept feeding the monster that Mahathir has become.
If Bersatu loses Tanjung Piai, why should we care? We have nothing to lose, not when we are already slowly losing everything.
May 9, 2018 is becoming a faint memory.
Kim Quek: Since the leadership of Harapan can’t tame the 94-year-old leader, the people have no choice but lodge their protest votes in by-elections.
The loss of one, or even a few seats, wouldn’t change the government. On the other hand, it would force component parties of Harapan to take the bitter medicine that will solve our leadership problem.
In time to come, the Harapan coalition may even, in retrospect, be thankful to the Tanjung Piai electorate if their votes have triggered the necessary changes.
There is wisdom in the Chinese sayings that “bitter medicine is usually good medicine” and “better to get cured through a short period of pain, than to undergo long suffering to evade the pain”.
Gaji Buta: A defeat in Tanjung Piai will not teach Harapan a lesson because it has been openly said. If it were a surprise, then it might have worked.
A defeat will only embolden PAS and the 'ummah' further if BN wins.
Ghostwhowalks: Bersatu is just as toxic as Umno-PAS, so why bother voting for either?
The defeat of Harapan at Tanjung Piai will force them to keep its promises. Otherwise, nothing will change.
Sometimes one needs to take a step backwards to ponder a reset, and then move forward again.
Apollos: “For we should not be trifling with the rights and future of our children and children's children,” Lim warned.
Not true. Losing this by-election will not cause the Harapan government to fall. But it will send a clear message to Harapan, particularly Bersatu, not to take our votes for granted. We are definitely not your fixed deposit.
"The DAP veteran argued this is because no other political coalition is committed to make Malaysia a top world-class nation."
Huh? What did you do with the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (Icerd) and the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC)?
How will that make us a top world-class nation?
WL: It's wrong to think the rakyat's protest vote is conceived without thinking of their children.
It is exactly because they are thinking of their children that they will cast their protest vote to stop this hypocrisy.
Apa Apa Pun Boleh: The Perak menteri besar (Ahmad Faizal Azumu) stabs you in the back. You continue as if nothing happened, and he is still arrogant about what he had said about DAP.
Sure, we don’t want to play with our children’s future, but if we don’t tell you loudly through our vote, you will take us for a ride.
Our children’s future has been at stake for decades, so what is new?
Ipoh PP: Lim, go sing your song to your master and tell him about the non-Malay children.
He will scoff and tell you the Malays should be given more help and all of us are 'orang asing' (foreigners).
Till Mahathir goes, Harapan will suffer for his sins.
Drngsc: It is exactly for the future generations that we want to teach Bersatu a lesson.
Bersatu is trying very hard to bring DAP into disrepute. The Liberation Tiger of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) issue and the communist-comic issue - those were directly aimed at DAP.
DAP leader Ronnie Lui is right. The old man cannot be trusted. He is working very hard behind your back to leave you all high and dry.
Lim, Tanjung Piai will strengthen your hands to get rid of him. I am surprised that you cannot see that. We are trying to help you.
Serembanpau: Mahathir couldn't care less if the by-election is lost as he can easily invite a toad to hop over to cover the loss.
Please let the non-Malays know how we have benefited from Harapan's rule?
Cut in allocation for Tunku Abdul Rahman University/College? Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) still not recognised? Matriculation quota 90/10 unchanged?
On the Other Hand: When we had voted for Harapan's manifesto, you delivered us the Umno/PAS manifesto instead.
So, we will not be voting for you as you can't be trusted, and worse, show no remorse for your spinelessness.
Milshah: This by-election will teach either Harapan or the voters a lesson for allowing Umno/PAS to win. One way or the other, someone will be taught a lesson.  - Mkini
