PETALING JAYA: A former lawyer who made a sexual assault report against a fellow lawyer has resigned as the press secretary to law minister Liew Vui Keong, some three days after complaining of authorities’ inaction over her police report.
Samantha Chong’s resignation will take effect a month from now. She joined Liew’s team six months ago.
However, Chong said her decision was due to personal reasons.
“It has nothing to do with my sexual harassment complaint,” she told FMT.
Last week, in a series of tweets to Inspector-General of Police Abdul Hamid Bador and Attorney-General Tommy Thomas, she asked why it took so long to get an update on the police report she filed six months ago.
“Updates are hard to get. Do you still need another six months?
“Is this how you treat a sexual assault survivor? And then pretend to be surprised why most victims remain silent?”
Chong, 34, had alleged that she was groped twice during a lawyers’ dinner gathering at a hotel here in June.
She then lodged a police report at the Sea Park police station.
Chong said the suspect was now happily carrying on with his life while “nightmares have been a loyal friend to me”. - FMT
